Getting rid of my glasses

You can say that I was born with glasses. People around me always have known me with my glasses on. Honestly saying I do not even know the exact age when I started wearing glasses, I know this much that it had been more than enough ( 16 yrs approx). At first a single pair of glasses never seem to be enough for more than a month, frequently I had to change my glasses. With time the glasses started to become a part of me, they used to be with me every time except the time of sleep. Sometime mistakenly I wore them even on showers.

The power of my eyes started to increase, the journey of my glasses which started with -1.25 power increased up to -6. The fun fact is that I did not even know my vision was so weak until one day I broke my glass. The day I had to wait for an entire day to get a new pair of glasses and this meant that I had to pass 24 hrs without my glasses. That was the day that made me realize how weak and hopeless I am without my glasses. The glasses were my self confident, my self esteem and a part of my body. I could not even decide what to have for lunch without my glasses. I did not even go out of my house, I felt so lost without it. That was the day that I decided to get rid of my glasses.

I had heard about laser-eye surgery before but I think I did not need it so did not pay much of attention to it but that day after getting my glasses the first thing that I did was to learn much about it. I came to know about the technology used in it what the surgery really is? How does it work? or more importantly Does it work or not?

After much of research I came to know yes it does work and here in Nepal many people have been benefited by it. Here the surgery is Performed in Refractive care unit of Tilganga eye Hospital. I went there to gather information on the surgery, where I came to know the age limit of the surgery was 18 yrs old. while those of above 18 years old were eligible for the surgery not everyone who wanted could have this surgery, it depended upon many factors as thickness of cornea and the flaps and more terms that I have no idea about. Before  going through the surgery we had to go through series of test to know the eligibility. I took the appointment for the test ( NPR 3000 or about 30 USD) and eventually pass in it. While being happy with the result I was nervous as well, as the doctors showed the complications that may occur during and after the surgery. It was totally up to me whether I had the guts to show up or not.

I showed some courage and took the surgery date of 1st Jan 2017. While I took the date because it was the day when my winter vacation started still 20 days were in between the surgery where different thoughts played into my mind. I was constantly thinking in my mind whether or not to have the surgery. The surgery cost NRP 85000. (approx 8500 USD)

Finally I signed those paper which told me regarding the risk of the surgery and submitted it and look forward for the day of surgery. Eventually the day came It was 1st jan, I had to go to surgery that day. I took the shower very early in the morning that day as the doctor instructed without any soaps or shampoos. I showed up at Hospital where I met Dr Kishor Raj Pradhan ( Surgeon) along with 5 others who were to have their surgery that day. He took us to his room and counselled us what to do at the time of surgery, he also checked to see if our eyes moved more often or not. Then he left us saying our surgery would start in 15 min and could have a cup of coffee if we wanted.

That was the longest 15 min that I had ever waited. After a while my turn came, I was quite nervous as I say. I said to myself,"be a man". I went inside , the surgeon welcomed me with a smile and I tried to smile. He instructed me to sleep the bed and adjusted my head. He closed one of my eyes and put some drop on the another( I guess they were anesthetic)  and after a instant I was inside the the machine. The machine closed in my eyes and the doctor said me to focus into the green light and eventually my vision was blank and I nearly panicked but the doctor told me to calm down for just about 25 seconds and just like that the surgery was over at the beginning I was able to see only the shades but eventually my vision improved. I was lead out of there and took to a resting place where I was to take some rest and medicine. And finally the surgery was completed

The day I had to put medicine every 15 min, because my eyes were dry (The side effect of the surgery). my vision had improved very much I could see more, but I did not open my eyes much often that day as I was instructed to give my eyes rest. The next day I had my post op follow up where I met up with my doctor and he check my eyes it was perfectly normal as he said , with power +1.5 which was normal to be and would be corrected soon. He said to be you are right where you are supposed to be and bid be good bye for a week.

After a week I went to see my surgeon again where he checked my eyes and was very happy indeed. His exact words were,"Very good improvement was done it doesnot seem that my surgery was done a week ago".

It been a month after my surgery; my visions are good, but have slight pain the eyes while watching the lights or Tvs ,etc. The doctor said it was normal and will eventually go away. And as for now my dependencies towards my glasses is over. I for now have a power of +0.5 which is improving towards normal, and as doctor said I had to be one of the unluckiest guy in order to have to wear glasses again.

Finally I got rid of my glasses, And I recommend everyone who wears glasses to do it.
